Character Notes

He insists on being called “Phra” (a higher rank than he possesses) and models his provincial life after a miniature version of the Ayutthayan royal hierarchy. He views the ancient Khmer-descended locals as “subjects of the thicket” and lives in a “pop-up” palace on high stilts to remain physically above the populace, and the mud.
