Kyō

The stifling, aristocratic heart of the empire where rigid samurai hierarchies are subverted on the muddy riverbeds.

Kyōto is a city of suffocating contradictions in 1600. The mud of Sekigahara has dried, and the iron grip of the Tokugawa Shogunate is closing over the capital. It is a place obsessed with order, where samurai enforce a brutal, innate moral superiority, and the lives of women and outcastes are increasingly monitored and suppressed.

Yet, beneath the towering roofs of noble mansions and the watchful eyes of magistrates, the city teems with a chaotic, uncontainable energy. The dry riverbeds, the pleasure districts, and the temple grounds act as liminal spaces—sanctuaries where the laws of the Shogunate warp and break. It is the perfect pressure cooker for a revolution of art and magic.

And the city has just been demoted. The Tokugawa Shogunate is investing in a new capital, Edo. Kyō means “capital” or “imperial capital”.Tō means “capital” or “large city”. Kyōtō is no longer it.

The city serves as the physical battleground between Okuni's transgressive Kabuki and the Shogunate's patriarchal theocracy, culminating in the tragic arson of the theatre.
