Kaminoyama is a modest, clean domain situated in the rugged northern mountains beyond the Mogami River. It is characterized by its freezing winter air, snow-heavy pine trees, and a quiet guesthouse. The domain is governed with nervous precision by Torii Tadamasa, who fears the political consequences of hosting a state exile. However, the physical environment—specifically the incorrectly proportioned eastern garden and the ancient pine tree in the courtyard—becomes the canvas upon which Takuan quietly reasserts his own way of living.
