Captain Matsudaira leads the guard detail that escorts Takuan Sōhō from Kyoto back to Edo. He is a practical military man, alert to the tactical vulnerabilities of the road, particularly during the crossing of the Ōsaka Mountain Pass. While he maintains a correct, professional distance, he is reasonable enough to accept Takuan’s mediation during the rōnin encounter and does not interfere with Hanada’s domestic management of the journey.
